WHY IT MATTERS
Why the Pacific is deeply invested in ecocide law
Pacific island nations are on the front line of climate impacts and environmental degradation, while remaining deeply dependent on healthy oceans and carefully stewarded ecosystems.
Ecocide law offers a way to encourage the whole world to strengthen accountability for the most serious environmental and climate harms which Pacific communities have done little or nothing to cause but which threaten their cultures, futures and even their statehood.
“We call on states to join the group of nations proposing to include the crime of ecocide in the Rome statute. Acting with the knowledge of severe and widespread or long-term damage to the environment can no longer be tolerated.”
H.E. Nikenike Vurobaravu
President of the Republic of Vanuatu, UN General Assembly 2022
