WHY IT MATTERS
Protecting irreplaceable natural and cultural heritage
The Americas are home to some of the planet's most megadiverse regions, yet the area is also one of the most dangerous places on Earth for environmental defenders and Indigenous peoples.
Laws against ecocide can help prevent the most severe environmental destruction, strengthen accountability, and protect natural systems as well as the peoples who inhabit or depend on them.
“... How many more natural disasters must occur? When will they stop the ecocide? … the time has come for the world to have an international body that holds accountable all those who cause damage to the planet.”
José Gabriel Carrizo
Vice President of the Republic of Panama, United Nations General Assembly, 2022
