“ECOCIDE”
literally means “to kill our home”.
Its a word that describes whats happening to the Earth right now:
the mass damage and destruction of the natural living world which has been happening for decades and has now led us to the global climate and ecological crisis that we find ourselves in today …..
and right now, those who are responsible for it are getting away with it.
It’s time to change the rules
An international crime of ecocide could create a global safety rail - a legal force-field which could stop severe harms to nature and help direct government policy, banking, investment and insurance away from dangerous practices and towards a safe and peaceful future on a healthy planet.
It would also mean that key decision makers; CEOs, government ministers etc, whose decisions threaten severe environmental harm, could be held personally accountable and face criminal charges.
Stop Ecocide International is the driving force behind this growing global movement of young people, corporate leaders, NGOs, indigenous and faith groups, influencers, academic experts, grassroots campaigns, individuals, allied groups and politicians across the globe, all working together right now, to get ecocide recognised as an international crime.

Its a straightforward process that we are already well on our way to making happen and YOU can help spread the word.
Key milestones over the last year:
June 2021 - launch of legal definition of ecocide from Independent Expert Panel
convened by Stop Ecocide Foundation.November 2021 - series of events at COP26 in Glasgow
December 2021 - historic official side event at the International Criminal Court's annual assembly supported by 4 of the most climate vulnerable states (Vanuatu, Samoa, Bangladesh, with an additional diplomatic intervention from Belgium)
State support - no fewer than 20 states have engaged (at parliament and/or government level) with the possibility of criminalising ecocide.
become a student ambassador
Our strategy is to encourage a simple demand to governments: “support making ECOCIDE an international crime.” and we are looking for Student Ambassadors internationally to become part of our rapidly growing global movement and help us spread the word.
You can give talks, organise webinars or events, lead a group, write a paper or get involved in high level advocacy in your own country – there are so many ways to help amplify this hugely important message.
