Youth Advocacy in Ecocide Law & Ocean Rights

Panel discussion with interactive Q&A and call to action
Tuesday 10 June, 1530 - 1700

MAMA SHELTER NICE 21 BOULEVARD DE RIQUIER 06300 NICE–FRANCE

The world's oceans face unprecedented threats from human activities including destructive fishing practices, deep-sea mining, and oil spills. These activities cause severe and widespread damage to marine ecosystems, threatening biodiversity and the livelihoods of coastal communities. Despite existing environmental regulations, there remains a significant gap in legal accountability for the most severe forms of ocean destruction.

This side event will showcase successful youth-led ocean conservation initiatives, while exploring how ecocide law can serve as a powerful tool to prevent harm to marine ecosystems. The event spotlights youth engagement in marine conservation, and the growing movement to recognise ecocide as an international crime that can protect our oceans. It will directly support the implementation of SDG14 by highlighting youth innovation in marine conservation, while proposing additional legal mechanisms to protect the marine environment. The panel features diverse youth initiatives from Stop Ecocide International, the Earth Law Centre, World Youth for Climate Justice, and GARN Youth Hub, among other environmental change-makers and partner youth and environmental organisations.

Speakers: Paulina Slawek, Ocean activist and Stop Ecocide International Co-lead of Student Ambassadors: "Youth-Led Ocean Protection Initiatives"; Clara Tomé, GARN Youth Hub facilitator, EU Climate Pact Ambassador; Ying Jie Han, Co-Lead proposal writing team for the Asian Front of World’s Youth for Climate Justice; Dana Ahmed, Ocean Advocate & Educator, International Law of the Sea Advisor, Founder of Ecospectrum; Lucy Ward, Earth Law Centre; Vedika Mandapati, Policy Analyst and Outreach Officer at Global Choices, Arctic Angel
