Recognising ‘Ecocide’ as a Crime: Local and Regional Governance on the Front Line of Severe Environmental Destruction

This interactive dialogue aims to highlight the role of local and regional government in preventing, criminalising and responding to severe environmental destruction (ecocide). It is the aim of this session to platform the perspectives and expertise of both organisations working at the intersection of local governance, climate justice and conflict prevention, as well as political representation, with first-hand knowledge of the impact of environmental destruction and international law.

By platforming these perspectives, the session aims to dispel the misconception that severe ecological harm happens in remote locations and only impacts nature, instead outlining the catastrophic consequences of ecocide on communities, situating LRG on the front line of response to environmental disasters. Using an interactive thinking exercise and structured dialogue, the session will give attendees a clear understanding of what ecocide law is and the role it could play in preventing environmental destruction and ensuring accountability for harm.

Moderator: Lauren Banham, Stop Ecocide
