This webinar responds to a critical policy window. Across Africa, discussions on ecocide are increasingly taking place at the national level, with several States exploring legislative and policy approaches to addressing severe environmental destruction. Recent developments in Mauritius where a domestic law on ecocide took place, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Ghana where bills are discussed and created illustrate growing interest in strengthening environmental accountability mechanisms, while regional institutions and processes, including those of the African Union, the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, continue to provide important platforms for dialogue and legal development.
