June 2025 - DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

On 5 June 2025, marking World Environment Day, the Dominican Republic took a significant legislative step as Congresswoman Llaniris Espinal introduced a bill to criminalise ecocide — defined as severe or irreversible damage to ecosystems — with penalties of up to 20 years in prison, mandatory restoration of harm, and financial sanctions. The proposal also outlines the creation of a strengthened environmental justice system, including specialised prosecutors and judges, restrictions on extractive activities in vulnerable areas, community involvement in protected zone management, legal compensation for displaced persons, a sustainability fund, and advanced environmental monitoring. The initiative responds to longstanding challenges around enforcement and awareness, aiming to embed stronger legal and institutional protections for nature.
