Earth Day Dialogues on Ecocide Law

On Earth Day 2023, let’s Stop Ecocide!

The world is facing an ecological crisis that threatens the very existence of life on the planet. Human activities have caused extensive damage to the environment, leading to climate change, biodiversity loss, and other forms of environmental degradation. In this context, the concept of ecocide law has emerged as a potential solution to hold decision-makers accountable for the harm they cause to the environment.

Ecocide law aims to make large-scale environmental destruction a punishable criminal offense, with the ultimate goal of preventing such destruction from occurring.

Youth for Ecocide Law is a global movement of young people committed to promoting and advocating for the adoption of the ecocide law. In particular, we are part of the Stop Ecocide movement to make ecocide an international crime at the International Criminal Court, and then a domestic crime for countries around the globe.

As part of our efforts to raise awareness, we are organizing a series of Youth Regional Dialogues on Ecocide Law on Earth Day, the 22nd of April 2023. The Dialogues will take place at many locations in each continent, in a language and at a time that is most suitable for that locality. They will provide an opportunity for young people from different regions to come together and learn about ecocide law, including how it applies to their specific regional contexts.

Our Goals:

  1. To explain what ecocide law means and how it applies in different local contexts.

  2. To educate and raise awareness about ecocide law, including its potential benefits and challenges.

  3. To empower the youth to be champions of ecocide law in their communities and advocate for its adoption.

Format:

The Youth Ecocide Regional Dialogues will be composed of both virtual and in-person events, taking place on the 22nd of April 2023, Earth Day.

HOW TO SET UP AN IN-PERSON EVENT:

Choose a time on April 22, 2023 to hold your event.

Find a public location that you can book or use free of cost

University classrooms and dining halls, cafes with broad seating structures that you can use, local NGO spaces that are open to use by environmental groups, outdoor parks (weather permitting), or the steps of a city hall (safety and weather permitting) are all good options!

Decide on an event structure

Would you like to give a short presentation or set up more of a panel-based event? Will there be time for questions? Will there be discussions with attendees?

Make sure your event format is conducive to the space you will be using!

Who will be giving the presentation / be the event’s panelists?

The presenter(s) can use this introductory slideshow and script to introduce your audience to the Stop Ecocide movement. Feel free to make a copy and edit to your specifications!

Our global Youth for Ecocide Law team can work with local teams to create content to be presented to participants.
